The Western States lottery and the four monuments

9,026 runners have entered the lottery for the 2027 Western States, for about 257 places. Most of them are strangers to this site. These are the ones the draw would change something for.

1,669 of the 9,026 applicants are in the database, meaning they have already finished at least two monuments. The 2026 lottery drew 257 names from 11,328 applicants. Applicant list taken from wser.org on November 6, 2026. Entries close on November 21, 2026, the draw takes place on December 5, 2026, for a race on June 26, 2027.

The Hardrock lottery is drawn the same day. Runners marked “Hardrock applicant too” are missing both races: either draw would move them up one monument. See the Hardrock lottery

One draw from the club of four

UTMB, the Diagonale des Fous and Hardrock done. Only Western States is missing. If the lottery picks them and they finish in June, they join the club. 30 runners in the world have only Western States left to run. 2 of them have entered this lottery.

Already in the club, going back anyway

They have finished all four, and they have entered the lottery again.

The odds, ticket by ticket

Each year a runner applies without being drawn, their ticket count doubles. A first-time applicant and a seven-year regular have nothing in common, which is why an average figure means nothing here.

Estimated for 257 places drawn — the figure for the 2026 lottery, as the 2027 number has not been announced yet. A drawn name leaves the hat with all its tickets, so the odds are not simply tickets divided by the total. Runners not drawn may still get in from the 75-name waitlist.
